Pairing extra numbers in the dashboard
In the dashboard, an extra number is linked to WhatsApp with a QR code or a pairing code. Both end the same way: the number shows up as a linked device in WhatsApp on the phone and starts sending messages through Turbo Notify.
First, add the extra number. The main number is linked as shown in the Quickstart. If you build your own pairing screen, use the API.
Which method to use
- QR code: use it when the number’s phone is with you, next to the dashboard screen.
- Code: use it when whoever has the phone is far away. The dashboard shows the code, and Copy instructions builds a text, in the language you pick, that you can send to that person.
Where to start
- Open Numbers (opens in a new tab) .
- On the number’s row, click Link. The number’s sheet opens.
- Pick the QR code or Code tab. A line under the tab says when to use it.
- Click Link number.
Link with a QR code
- Pick the QR code tab and click Link number. The QR code appears on the sheet.
- On the number’s phone, open WhatsApp at Linked devices > Link a device.
- Point the phone’s camera at the QR code on the screen.
The QR code renews on its own while the attempt is open, and a countdown shows how much time is left. If it reaches zero, the sheet offers Generate new QR code.
Link with a code
- Pick the Code tab and click Link number. The code appears on the sheet, with a countdown.
- On the number’s phone, open WhatsApp at Linked devices > Link a device > Link with phone number instead.
- Type the code.
Copy code copies only the code. To send someone the full steps, click Copy instructions and pick the language of the text. That button only exists while a code is on the screen.
If the code is typed wrong, WhatsApp invalidates it right away. Click Generate new code and type the new one.
If it did not work
After a failure, the sheet shows the reason and, usually, a Try again button. For example, when the QR code or the code was not used in time, the message is “Linking did not finish in time.”.
If Try again appears, use it. If the message asks for something else (use another number, disconnect another connection), follow what it says.
Linked from another WhatsApp
If the QR code was scanned, or the code typed, in a WhatsApp that is not the one of the registered number, the link is refused and the sheet says “The number was linked from a different WhatsApp account.”. Repeat it on the registered number’s phone. The matching reason in the API is paired_phone_mismatch, described in Number status.
Once linked
On the phone, the number shows up under Linked devices with the name of your organization. On WhatsApp Business for Android, the app asks the person to type a name for the device and shows that name instead.
In the dashboard, the number becomes Connected and can send messages.
Cancel linking
While linking is in progress, Cancel linking stops the attempt and the number goes back to having no link. To link later, start again at Link number.
If you build your own screen
If you resell numbers and want your customer to link inside your platform, use the pairing API: it offers the same two methods, QR code and code.
